Don’t let the shapeless crowns of these small trees fool you – they are astonishing trees! Their vitamin C rich red plums are edible and very tasty, although sour! Also where the name is derived from. If you see red fruit on these trees, try them – they are lekker.

Birds:

The fruit are relished by birds such as Barbets, Red winged starlings and Mousebirds. These trees also attracts a variety of butterflies and insect eating birds.

Animals:

Bushbucks, Kudus, Impalas, Klipspringers and other browsers enjoy the leaves and Baboons and Monkeys the fruit on the trees. Bushpigs, Warthogs and Duikers will eat fruit fallen to the ground.
